Overview

Readiris Advanced OCR for HP is an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) application used to convert scanned documents or existing image-based files into editable and searchable formats, including Microsoft Word (DOCX), Microsoft Excel (XLSX), and searchable PDF files.

HP provides Readiris PDF 23 as a 10‑day trial so users can evaluate whether the software meets their document workflow needs.

Software Version and Licensing

  • HP provides Readiris PDF 23
  • Includes a 10‑day evaluation trial
  • At the first launch, users can:
    • Start the free trial, or
    • Enter a purchased Activation Code

Important Licensing Note

  • The trial installs the Corporate edition
  • The purchased activation code determines the final edition
  • If a Pro license is purchased, some Corporate-only features will not be available

Scanner Driver Requirements

Readiris supports two scanner driver types:

TWAIN Driver (Recommended)

  • Provides advanced scanning controls
  • Best option for OCR and document workflows
  • Required for full Readiris functionality

WIA Driver (Limited Functionality)

  • Supported but offers reduced features
  • Suitable only for basic scanning

Installing HP Scanner Software

When connecting an HP scanner or multifunction printer, Windows may prompt you to install the HP Smart app.

⚠️ HP Smart alone may not install the TWAIN driver.

To ensure TWAIN support:

  1. Download and install the full HP printer/scanner software for your model
  2. Use the HP driver support site:
    https://support.hp.com/drivers

Readiris Scanner Setup

Multiple scanners may be connected to a single computer. Always verify the correct scanner source before scanning.

Scanner Configuration Steps

  1. Select Scanner Source

    • Open Readiris
    • Click the down arrow under Scan
    • Select Select Source
    • Choose the desired scanner
      • ✅ Prefer entries labeled TWAIN
      • ⚠️ WIA entries work with reduced functionality
  2. Configure Scanner Settings

    • Open the Scan drop-down menu
    • Click Settings
    • Select Scanner Model
    • Choose your scanner profile (based on the driver selected)
  3. If Your Scanner Is Not Listed
    • Select:
      [TWAIN] [Other models]
  4. Enable Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)
    • Check the ADF option if your scanner supports it

How to Use Readiris

Scanning or Opening Files

  1. Choose one of the following:
    • Scan directly from the scanner, or
    • Click From File to open an existing image or PDF
  2. Recommended scan settings:
    • 300 DPI
    • Color or Grayscale

Creating Output Files

  1. Select the output format:
    • DOCX (Microsoft Word)
    • PDF
    • XLSX (Microsoft Excel)
  2. Choose a save location when prompted
  3. To adjust output settings:
    • Click the down arrow under the selected format
    • Select Settings
  4. To choose a different format:
    • Click Other
    • Select the desired output format

Output Behavior

  • The converted file opens automatically in the associated application
    Examples:
    • DOCX → Microsoft Word
    • XLSX → Microsoft Excel

Improving OCR Results

Best Practices

  • Use high-quality, clean scans
  • Avoid skewed or low-resolution documents
  • Scan text-heavy documents in grayscale when possible
